- Norfolk Daphne, AKA Jo Woods, partner, Gallery Plus -

Regular visitors to the gallery will be aware of owner Jo's passion (obsession!) for knitting and, in the autumn and winter months, seen us both wearing sweaters that she's made. She's now taken this a step further and combined her love of Norfolk, Iceland, knitting, and repeat pattern to come up with her own Lopapeysa design - "Barley" - and created a collection of unique, limited-edition hand-knitted sweaters that are available exclusively from us.
(Lopapeysa: Lopi = Icelandic yarn, Peysa = sweater)

Featuring a stylised repeat pattern of barley stalks and with a nod towards windmills – both iconic of life in this area - this is Jo's Norfolk take on a traditional Icelandic Lopapeysa.

Jo and Trevor spend a lot of their spare time walking in the beautiful countryside here in North Norfolk and often find themselves alongside fields of barley in the summer. The vertical repeat pattern of the stalks provided the inspiration as something Jo could replicate in a knitting design, then she developed the idea further by adding the 'windmills' for the cuffs, hem, and within the yoke design.

Jo says: "It was pure pleasure choosing the colour combinations of Icelandic Lettlopi wool for each sweater. I made each one slightly different in how the colours worked together but deliberately concentrated on natural tones. They've all knitted up so beautifully and I couldn't be happier with how they've turned out.”

There's only one of each Barley sweater available, as shown above, because each one
takes around a month to knit entirely by hand. These sweaters are unisex.

If you'd like to learn more about these Barley Lopapeysas, head to Jo's sewing and knitting blog 'Norfolk Daphne', where you'll also find more detailed photos, background information about the unique Lopi wool, the history of the Icelandic sweater, and advice on how to care for them.
