- Artist statement -

Jade Pinnell is a cast glass artist residing in Somerset. She graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a first class honours degree in Decorative Arts, specialising in glass. Having completed some work experience at a glass school during her degree, she was immediately offered an apprenticeship there. There she trained in a number of different glass making skills and reaffirmed her love for kiln glass. In 2012 Jade travelled to Australia and New Zealand and worked for other well-known glass artists. This amazing experience built on her existing knowledge and, once she was back in the UK, she was inspired to develop an exciting new range of cast glass sculpture.

Jade now works for international glass artist Fiaz Elson and also uses the professional studio to create her own unique sculpture. She has exhibited her work all over the UK and has also received the ‘Highly Commended’ award in The Glass Prize, 2015.

Making…
Jade initially sculpts her forms from wax sheets and polystyrene. A mould mixture is then poured over these models to form moulds that can withstand high temperatures. The models are then extracted and glass is meticulously placed into these moulds, which are then fired in the kiln. Once the pieces emerge from the kiln, Jade then uses a series of ‘cold-working’ processes including grinding and polishing to shape and finish the works.

“Glass itself inspires me; it’s a beautiful, yet challenging material and I love its slight unpredictability. I am inspired by my ever-changing surroundings and I am fascinated with how natural light interacts and contrasts with manmade environments. My inspirations come from places close to home and as far away as Thailand. I use the cast glass technique to capture a fleeting moment of interaction between light and architecture. Angular forms are used to create the illusion of more depth, which accentuates the flow of colour inside the pieces. Colour is so important. I use carefully selected colour compositions as a way of creating atmosphere and communicating a sense of time.”
