Artist statement

Toby Winterbourn is an artist blacksmith based  near Dereham in Norfolk.

After moving to Norfolk from London in 2002 where he worked as a postman, Toby worked for four years with a Norfolk blacksmith making
candlesticks and items for the home. He later worked in metal fabrication and agricultural engineering before returning to traditional and restoration blacksmithing. Whilst restoring old gates, he enjoyed making the decorative leaves and flowers which often feature and started thinking about his own designs and how they may be translated into garden sculptures.

Living in Norfolk and walking on the North Norfolk coast he is inspired by the wild flowers that grow in the hedgerows. Seeing the silhouette of dried cow parsley by the side of the road gave him the idea for his first large sculpture. ‘Gone to seed’ was a scaled-up 10ft tall cow parsley which was shown at Elmham House Sculpture Trail as part of Norfolk Open Studios and later at Savill Gardens in Windsor. He used over 1000 old nails to make the seed heads and rusty tubes for the stems.

Previous public commissions have included a pair of gazebos with a fig leaf design for Felbrigg Hall, a large foxglove for Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, and Cow Parsley sculptures for both Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and East Ruston Old Vicarage, the latter of which (shown to the right) was featured on the BBC’s ‘Glorious Gardens from Above’ with Christine Walkden.

Toby’s sculptures usually start with small component details heated and shaped in the forge, which are welded together to make much larger pieces. He likes to use hardware in different ways, such as flattened screws to make each wiggly-edged leaf of fern fronds. He works mainly with steel which he either leaves to rust or galvanises with a zinc coating, depending on where it will be sited.

Gallery Plus stocks a large range of his metal garden sculptures, in all shapes and sizes, based on wild flowers and organic forms including cow parsley, bulrushes, brush grasses and twist grasses.

These mild steel sculptures look equally fantastic displayed outdoors or inside.
