Emilie Taylor

After graduating from Liverpool John Moores University in 2003 with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Emilie now works primarily in Ceramics taking inspiration from modern architecture.

Emilie was awarded a place on the 2007 ‘Starting Out’ course for emerging artists / makers, a collaboration between Yorkshire Art Space and Arts Council Yorkshire and subsequently spent four months working as part of a mentoring residency.

Emilie’s studio is based in Sheffield since and her work can be seen as part of a permanent display at contemporary ceramics at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire.

Her most recent exhibitions include the Ceramic Open, Newcastle and The Old Sweet Shop, Sheffield, and she won a ‘Grants for the Arts’ award from Arts Council England.

Emilie’s larger pots are hand coiled and the smaller pots are slip cast. The stoneware forming the structure of the vessels is deliberately left visible to acknowledge the concrete of the tower blocks functional, brutalist exterior.

The slip decoration depicts the chintz patterns often chosen by residents to personalise their interiors. A sentimental reminiscence of a cultural style clash pertinent to a period of history that, as their demolition continues to attract large and enthusiastic crowds is about to be permanently lost.

The final drawing in oxide or under-glaze transposes the linear outline of the structure of the building in a style that is deliberately naïve- a pedestrian understanding of an intimidating building containing social and political aspirations. Souvenirs of a very British relationship with post war architecture.
